Jack attended Tennessee Tech, where he received a BS degree in Health and Physical Education and a Commission as a Distinguished Military Graduate, entering the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry. During his military career his assignments included tours at Fort Campbell, Ky, Fort Walters, TX, Fort Benning, GA, South Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Fort Leavenworth, KS, and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. While in the military he was awarded the following Awards and Decorations: The Silver Star, three Distinguished Flting Crosses, three Bronze Stars with V for Valor, 22 Air Medals (two w/v), the Vietnamese Cross Gallantry with Gold Leaf, two Legions of Merit, 3 Army Commendation Medals, and many other Awards including Master Army Aviation wing and Senior Jump Wings.
After retiring from the Army as a full Colonel he was able to devote full-time to his love of hunting and fishing. Not only does he enjoy that, but maybe more he enjoys teaching others about the outdoors. He joined Hunter's Specialties the last year he was in the military and was available upon retirement to spend more time giving seminars, guiding, and doing in-store promotions. For the last 22 years he has operated the fishing dock at Camp Rainbow, a camp for terminally and critically ill children, teaching hundreds of kids how to fish. In 2007 he was sent to guide "The St Jude's Hunt for a Cure" turkey hunt and in 2000, was inducted into the Tennessee Turkey Hunters Hall of Fame.
